The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is an international competition for high school students, initiated and organized by astronomers and physicists from multiple countries. It is held annually and is one of the 12 International Science Olympiads. The IOAA highlights the significance of astronomy and astrophysics within the broader scientific framework, placing it on par with other disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, informatics, and earth sciences. The competition covers a wide range of knowledge, including astronomical observation, cosmology, and astrophysics.

 

Our comprehensive astronomy course is specifically designed to prepare students for the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). Spanning four terms, this course provides systematic training to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for success at the highest level of competition.

  • Term 4 and Term 1: Students will focus on building a strong foundation in astronomy, covering essential concepts and problem-solving techniques.
  • Term 2: National selection will take place, where the top performers will earn a spot on New Zealand’s national IOAA team.
  • Term 3: Selected team members will participate in an intensive national training camp, followed by the final IOAA competition on the global stage.
